Lucia Cao-Spurlock

As hobbies, I enjoy reading, dancing, and organizing, but most of all spending time with my family and friends.

It’s my pleasure to introduce myself as Lucia Cao-Spurlock, but my students refer to me as Ms. Lucy. My undergraduate degree is in the field of criminal justice. For eight years, I worked for the Texas Department of Protective & Regulatory Services as a Child Protective Services Supervisor/Investigator. During that time, I was promoted to the Operations Support Division. My older sister is my best friend. She wanted to open her own boutique and salon, so I left my career at the state office. In 1998, we opened Beauty Emporium & Salon in Bee Caves. Our business lasted 22 years before we sold it.

Martial arts became a part of my life when I enrolled my daughter in the Tiger Cub program in 2010. I noticed my daughter was having trouble focusing and had a lot of energy, so I researched martial arts. After much research, I was able to see firsthand the positive impact of martial arts on my daughter. Today, she is a confident, focused and disciplined young woman; a testament to the power of martial arts. She is 16 and a 4th-degree Level 2 Black Belt. My journey in martial arts has been rewarding, as I have seen first-hand the incredible transformation it can bring to a person’s life. I am proud that my daughter has chosen martial arts as a key part of her life and I am excited to see her progress even further.

Martial arts has always been a passion of mine, but I grew up in a farming community without a martial arts school. While watching Bela in class, I noticed a younger man, rather than Master Maddox, teaching the classes. To my surprise, I discovered the younger man was Master Maddox’s son, Frank Maddox (also a Master). Master Maddox’s passion, love, and sense of community inspired me to try classes in 2016 after becoming acquainted with him over time. I admit, Master Maddox bugged me until I tried a class, and my resulting journey has been fantastic — growing, learning, and becoming physically stronger, but most importantly, sharing this journey with my daughter.

As a martial arts instructor, I wanted to help other students as Master Maddox helped my daughter. Having lost two dear family members at a very young age, my daughter became lost and angry and struggled in class. He never gave up on her. He provided her with private lessons for three months. We will be forever grateful for the kindness he showed my family during a difficult time.

We are a community built by amazing students, parents, and instructors. You will grow not just in strength and self-confidence, but in spirit as well as a member of this community under the leadership of Master Maddox. Through the variety of classes and events provided, you will build strong relationships with instructors and other students. In addition, you will boost your confidence and gain an understanding of Master Maddox’s values and principles, which will help you become a more well-rounded individual.
